28/3/2015 0 Comments Hurrah for HudsonAt our March meeting we were honoured to meet Mel Griffiths and her guide dog Hudson. Despite Mel doing all the hard work explaining how Guide Dogs UK breed, train and allocate their guide dogs, it was of course Hudson who received all the attention & praise. However, if you are looking for an inspiring woman look no further than Mel. She works for NCC, campaigns and educates on behalf of Guide Dogs UK and her energy seems to know no bounds. The third part of the team was Judith who accompanied them on their visit. She began as a "My Guide" volunteer working with Mel but their friendship has continued beyond their official relationship, and Judith now helps out with free running Hudson and giving Mel lifts to talks such as ours. See photos of the evening in our gallery.

25/3/2015 0 Comments Notts Fed Annual MeetingOn Wednesday 25 March Notts Federation of WIs held their Annual Meeting at the Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham. Speakers on the day were National Federation Chair Janice Langley and TV historian Ruth Goodman. Making sure that everything ran smoothly were a team of stewards lead by Kay Brown of BVWI. Four of the 6 stewards came from BVWI with the other two hailing from our neighbours Lapwings WI.
23/3/2015 0 Comments Curling with a K (and no ice)Leenside (Hucknall) WI invited BVWI to take up spare places at their Kurling evening on Friday night. Marlene, Brenda and Debbie made their way over to Hucknall where they teamed up with Judy - our dual member - for the evening's entertainment. WI Kurling runs on the same principles as the Winter Olympic game but with castors and minus the ice! Wendy Richardson (Sports & Leisure Sub-Committee Chair) organised everyone into into teams. Some had played before and others, like Debbie and Brenda, were novices. Team Marlene & Judy were the highest scorers in their heat, clocking up around 20 points more than their nearest rivals but they missed out in the play-offs. It took three play-offs to decide the final winners from each group. The skirting board in the Methodist church will never be the same again but a great time was had by all!
