27/11/2014 0 Comments Patchwork Lives - Inspiring WomenOn 26th November we were visited by Imogen Joyce from Arletty Theatre who spoke on Patchwork Lives – Inspiring Women. Imogen engagingly wove together stories she’d personally collected from local people of women who’d inspired them. Many of the stories featured grandmothers, with stories of famous, and even infamous, women such as Nellie Bly. She was an American journalist who travelled around the world in 72 days in 1889. Also mentioned were two female pirates, the Chilwell Canary Girls (the subject of Arletty’s WWI production ‘Swan Canaries’) and Dr James Barrie. The latter carried out one of the earliest caesarean sections where both the mother and baby survived and had a positive impact on hospital conditions. But "Dr James Barrie wasn't a woman" I hear you say - however, an autopsy showed that she was indeed a woman and had, at some time in her life, given birth. On display as a backdrop to the talk was a patchwork quilt with the names and details of the inspirational women mentioned. It was a really interesting and inspiring evening with Imogen and there was a veritable queue of ladies who wanted to speak to her afterwards. We swapped the usual raffle for a collection of presents to be given to children who will find themselves spending Christmas in hospital - everyone gave very generously and we will arrange to drop these off at the hospital closer to the big day. Last night saw the Bestwood Village Bonfire Night celebrations take place arranged by St Mark's church. BVWI had their usual "Sweets & Treats" stall selling chocolate apples, chocolate owl cakes, cinder toffee, bonfire toffee and marshmallow sparklers but also had a selection of woodland creatures looking to be adopted. The hedgehogs and owls were made from wool fabric and old books and were soon being offered new homes, Thanks to everyone who helped by making the stall goods, baking the goodies or manning the stall. We made £134.50 on the night and were able to donate £70 to the firework fund. |
