24/9/2015 0 Comments Legacy PlantingThe September meeting of BVWI was a special occasion. In honour of the WI's 100th birthday and the fact that BVWI is about to complete its 10th year a tree was planted in Bestwood Country Park. Members gathered an hour early so that the formalities of the planting could take place before the meeting. Special permission had been granted by Notts County Council, who own the land, to plant the tree inside the compound of the historic Bestwood Winding Engine House on the old colliery site.
The tree chosen was a ginkgo biloba. This species is closely linked to the fossil trees under our feet which over 300 million years ago were part of the forest which, over time, has formed the coal measures on which our village was so dependent. The tree was planted by Jane Jefferson, County Chairman, Brenda Langsdale, BVWI's current President, and Sue McDonald, NCC's Community Liaison Officer. Once it was firmly in place other members took turns to help put the soil back around the tree. The party then retired indoors and the September meeting got under-way with a talk by Peter Butler & Geoff Sheldon of the Eric Coates Society. We heard about his rise to fame over the early part of the 20th century and were treated to musical interludes of his more well-known pieces. Peter was then brave enough to judge our tea cosy making competition choosing two winners; Brenda & Angela - who both received a prize. The lovely refreshments on the night were provided by Judy & Sarah More photos of the night are in the gallery.

21/9/2015 0 Comments Civic ReceptionBrenda Langsdale, President of BVWI, was proud to represent us at the Civic Reception held on Wednesday 16th September to mark the WI centenary. Hosted by the Lord Mayor, herself a past member of the WI, and attended by the Sheriff of Nottingham, the presidents of all 115 WIs in the county were invited for tea and nibbles at the Council House along with Trustees from the Notts Federation. It was a great chance to chat with friends and network with other WI members.
6/9/2015 0 Comments Up and AwayBVWI went gliding with Notts Federation. Julie and Brenda took to the air with Darlton Gliding Club at Tuxford aerodrome on August 21 with other ladies from around the county.
Conditions were breezy at first but soon calmed which allowed them to soar over the surrounding area. Julie said afterwards how calm it was and much quieter than expected. We have a few photos in the gallery. |
