27/4/2014 0 Comments Girl Power!BVWI members, along with their friends, neighbours and family, battled for the honours at the Embankment Club skittle alley on Friday. The 24 players competed over 5 rounds of long alley skittles, interrupted only briefly by a pie & chip supper upstairs. In the end Julie's team won by just one point from Brenda's team, so every skittle really did count. How appropriate that the winning team was the only all girl team. The atmosphere was friendly while still being very competitive. A re-match was suggested so we just have to pick the date and persuade Julie to arrange it again. More photos in the gallery.

25/4/2014 0 Comments Making The NewsThe BVWI open night once again offered our members and guests a chance to meet a famous face from the BBC. This year Carol Hinds from East Midlands Today came along to talk to us about how the news is made. Her talk included a couple of DVDs called "How we do things" and "How we don't do things" - the second of which contained an amusing selection of out-takes from the cutting room floor. Between the DVDs Carol explained her role both in front of the camera and behind it. She spoke of how things have changed over the (almost) 25 years she has been in the industry. There followed a lengthy question and answer session when Carol was very comfortable fielding enquiries as diverse as "Do you do your own hair & make-up?" and "What will the BBC be called if Scotland gain independence?" Carol was happy to stay behind afterwards to talk to members of the audience over a coffee and a piece of one of her favourite cakes - lemon drizzle. To say a little thank you to her and all our newsroom favourites we presented Carol with a tin containing one of Christine's wonderful Victoria sponge cakes. We will be looking for the crumbs around the EMT set next time the news is on air! We almost made the news ourselves on the night as the Community Centre had to be evacuated after the fire alarm was set off by the steam from a slightly over-enthusiastic tea urn. Sadly for her, but thankfully for us, Carol avoided this newsworthy event by about 15 minutes and we had managed to retake our seats before she arrived. Another great opportunity missed!
