25/10/2014 0 Comments Vintage DesignOur October meeting had a definite vintage feel as we welcomed Suzanne Curtis to talk to us about her business venture as Belle & Olive involving lots of hand-made lovely things. After giving us a potted history of her conventional career she explained how she bravely made the leap into the uncertain world of self-employment with her craft & vintage up-cycling business. She had brought along a selection of her craft items which ranged from decorated boxes and jars to jewellery and from soft toy animals to wooden letter blocks. She admitted that her personal favourites are the wide range of brooches she makes using felt, fabric, buttons and beads. After the talk we checked out the stall and took the chance to purchase a few early Christmas presents and no doubt a few personal treats as well. Afterwards we held a promises auction which raised around £20 for BVWI funds - thanks to all those who offered their skills and time and all those who bid for them. Check out the photos in our gallery.

21/10/2014 0 Comments Bottled Coffee? The Coffee Club had an outing to the Bottle Kiln at West Hallam which meant no one had the bother of the washing up!
It also meant there was more temptation on offer than normal as there are craft & jewellery items to buy there as well as the amazing selection of cakes & savouries. See below June, Carol H, Deborah, Julie, Sue, Debbie, Brenda, Sarah and Judy. As you see, many of them succumbed to the lure of the shops and have shopping bags to prove it. The poppies were crafted by WI members and the village Knit & Natter group hosted by Brenda. Our poppies went on to form part of the BBC Radio Nottingham BIG Poppy Knit Exhibition on at the Nottingham Contemporary over the weekend where over 66,000 poppies were on show. Many WIs across the county have been involved in this amazing project which originally hoped to have one poppy for each of the 11,000 Nottinghamshire men that fell in the Great War. Sophie Shardlow, Deputy editor at BBC Radio Nottingham, came up with the idea for the Big Poppy Knit but the making of over 6 times that many poppies has shocked her. They will all now be sent to the British Legion to be sold alongside the paper poppies for remembrance Sunday. See photos of the exhibition in our gallery. |
