22/6/2015 0 Comments Catering for the over 50'sToday Brenda, Mary & Judy delivered the light lunch at a village event arranged by Notts County Council at the Community Centre. The event was designed to show the over 50's in the village what services and organisations were available to them with a selection of groups holding stalls and giving out information on their work. Sandwiches, cakes and puddings along with hot & cold drinks were provided by the WI with help from members of the Parish Council. Those that turned up were encouraged to have a go at crafts. This may well have launched a boom in the birth of book hedgehogs in the vicinity!

6/6/2015 0 Comments Centenary Annual MeetingThe Royal Albert Hall filled with 5,000 WI members for the Centenary National Annual Meeting at the Royal Albert Hall in London. One delegate was sent to the meeting free of charge to represent 3 WIs - their own and two other local ones. BVWI did not have anyone in attendance this year as we were represented by the delegate from Abbey Gates WI. We did however, get to see all the goings on at the RAH as we watched live streaming of the event at Cineworld in Nottingham city centre. Mary, Judy, Brenda, Carol & Kay went along to see HRH Queen Elizabeth II formally open the meeting accompanied by Sophie, Countess of Wessex and the Princess Royal.
The resolution debate was a very lively affair which ended in a motion to move on and not actually have a vote. The three speakers were very inspiring women - Lucy Worsley Tanni Grey-Thompson and Helena Morrissey. The Baton ended its 18,000 mile journey and was handed over to the Queen almost exactly a year after we had it in the village. 5/6/2015 0 Comments By Royal Invitation.. To TeaAs part of the WI Centenary celebrations each WI in the UK was asked to nominate a representative to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace on 2nd June. Debbie Clarke was the lucky lady from BVWI to be picked out of the hat. She travelled to London by coach with other Notts Fed WI ladies on the morning of the garden party. The weather forecast had been very mixed for the day, but in the end the sun shone when it was needed between 3pm and 5pm, although the wind was brisk and threatened a few hats.
The Duchess of Cornwall, the Countess of Wessex, the Duchess of Gloucester and Princess Alexandra were the hosts on the day and they circulated amongst the crowd of 8,000 WI members during the 2 hours. Sandwiches and cakes were served and the band played during the event. Debbie had a wonderful time and shared her experience and photographs with members at our June meeting. |
