27/8/2014 0 Comments Spell Well.. in a NutshellTonight out monthly meeting saw fellow WI member Lorna Weir explaining the origins of some of the more unruly words in the English language. Who would have thought that some of the extra "ought" letters in words were caused by type setters being paid by the letter padding out their salary! After a comprehensive tour through the history of English we were challenged to a quiz where we had to roughly assign a country of origin to many interesting words. A few photos of the evening are in the gallery.

18/8/2014 0 Comments Racing CertaintyIt was a foregone conclusion that the four BVWI ladies that went along to Southwell Races yesterday would have a great time. It was Ladies Day with a race sponsored by Notts Federation of WIs. Julie, Brenda, Debbie and Carol took advantage of the special ticket price for WI members to have a fantastic day out. The first race on the card was the WI sponsored "The WI Inspiring Women Handicap Steeple Chase". The winner was West End ridden A.P. McCoy, Sports Personality of the Year 2010. Luckily we had all backed this horse so it was winnings all round. Jane Jefferson Notts Fed Chairman and Maureen Ashby (ex-chair) presented the cup and the £1,981 in prize money. During the ensuing 5 races the weather was very changeable; hot when sunny or cool with the rain, but always windy. We had mixed results with our bets on the other races but enjoyed cheering our horses on to win or lose. The combination of an excuse to dress up, a free glass of wine and plenty of sunshine made for a perfect day. The icing on the cake was a chance to listen to a Take That tribute band once the horse-racing was over. No one has yet mentioned whether they won any other money on the races - watch out Hobby Craft if they did! More photos in the gallery. |
