27/9/2014 0 Comments Hard Cheese! We found out the hard way that when you invite guests to your sporting event you run the risk of them beating you. The BVWI long alley skittle evening included a Mapperley WI member, along with her and our friends & family. The Embankment Club offered its usual deal of the downstairs alley for the games and a fish or pie supper upstairs in the conservatory. It wasn't quite run according to strict Olympic-style rules and Kathleen's throw line crept ever closer to the pins, but we all had a lot of fun throwing wooden cheeses at the elusive 9 pins. The honours yet again went to Julie's team - we're sure that's her only reason for arranging these events - but individual high scorers for both men and women went to our guests. See below how the prizes were awarded.

25/9/2014 0 Comments Nature and History surround usAt the September meeting of BVWI we had twice the entertainment as we had two speakers rather than the usual one. Sue McDonald - Community Liaison Officer from NCC - gave us an illustrated talk about the ecology and biodiversity in the various habitats in Bestwood Country Park. Then Adele Williams - local NCC Heritage Officer - gave a talk about the history of Bestwood Park, Bestwood Colliery and Bestwood Village illustrated by a slide show and the room we were sitting in! Both showed great passion about their subject and an enviable depth of knowledge. They stayed on to answer questions after the talks and were kept busy throughout the coffee break. Sue then started off the raffle draw for the prizes on the theme of the outdoors.
14/9/2014 0 Comments Oh! What A Lovely TeaYesterday the Dynamo House was ringing to the sounds of WWI songs and the clink of vintage tea cups as it hosted the Bestwood Village Poppy Walk. Starting out from the War Memorial at 2pm the group of around 40 took a guided walk around the Mill Lakes. This was followed by an optional tour of the Winding Engine House and then the part of the day BVWI were most involved in - the afternoon tea. Dressed proudly in their "Nippies" costumes, made by Carol Hart, they served teas & coffees, sandwiches and cakes. The event was completed with readings from Gedling residents' diaries and the singing of war time songs organised by Becky Matter. To see photos of the event take a look in our gallery. |
